Earlier this year Samsung announced that it would be selling “the world’s first” consumer-focused 8K TV. Well, consumers that can afford a $15,000 display. Samsung has been working on this release for some time. While you won’t expect to see 8K content any time soon, there is a substantial amount of tech packed in here that promises a next-level viewing experience. The Samsung Q900R not only delivers ultra high-resolution capabilities, but the panel is 85-inches in size. That makes it easily one of the largest TVs out there and you can now put one in your living room.
Samsung Q900R 85-inch 8K TV is now available
Starting today, you can now pre-order the new Samsung Q900R 85-inch 8K TV. The price has been set at just under $15,000. Samsung is offering financing, as it knows this is simply out of the realm for most consumers. Expect to pay around $400 per month, if you were to go that route.
One of the defining features of the Samsung Q900R is its integrated 8K upscaling feature that uses a “quantum processor” to boost resolution. There’s hardly any 8K content available at this time, so Samsung has to upscale anything for its new display. Samsung promises that it can turn “today’s content into stunning 8K for improved details and sharpened definition.”
It of course supports all of the latest codecs and specifications, including HDR and high-resolution streaming services. One standout feature is Samsung’s One Invisible Connection system, which use a secondary box as a plug-in for your various inputs. That allows just a single cable to run to the TV while eliminating clutter along the way.
Like Samsung’s other TVs, the Q900R supports Ambient Mode. This allows users to capture a photo of the wall behind the TV and upload it, giving a transparent look of sorts. It’s kind of a silly feature that does deliver some pretty cool visuals.
When does 8K content become a reality?
That’s a great question and the answer remains unclear. 2018 has seen an influx of 4K content as providers like Netflix and Amazon are rolling out more high-resolution video than ever before. But it’s taken years to even make a dent. Many satellite providers are still distributing 720p feeds. Long story sort, it’s going to take a while, maybe even decades, to see true 8K content readily available for consumers.
