Elago is one of those companies that knows exactly how to make products that create a nostalgia for the products that we once could not bear to live without, but are no longer used in our day-to-day lives. Its latest Apple Watch stand is no exception. The W5 resembles the original Game Boy, an iconic portable game console that paved the way to where we are today with Nintendo’s 2DS, 3DS, and Switch.
Up to this point, Elago’s prior Apple Watch stands have either mimicked Apple hardware or offered a plain, straightforward design. The W2 is the company’s vanilla offering, while the W3 and W4 have been silicone replicas of the Macintosh 128K and 1998 iMac.
Marketing video
Alongside the release of the W5, Elago has uploaded an intro video to its YouTube channel. This is typical of the company and not a bad idea since it is yet another way to create a bit more hype about the product. The 26-second video never once calls out Nintendo, but instead focuses on showing off the design, simple assembly, and colors offered.
Multiple colors
Much like it’s previous releases, Elago is offering its new stand in a variety of colors. There are four available options, allowing customers to find an option that suits them best. Red, navy, black, and light grey are the four options displayed in the product’s marketing video and images, but at this time it appears only black and light grey are available for order.
Apple Watch compatibility
For the first time since its original release, the latest Apple Watch brought a significant physical redesign into the mix. With the launch of Series 4, Apple shrunk bezels and embraced rounded corners to the screen. This gave customers bigger screens that did not require them to wear watches that were not too much larger.
That being said, the design did change and could therefore have an effect on some existing products. Thankfully this does not have an effect on Elago’s new stand. From the original 38mm all the way up to the new 44mm, the W5 is ready to play nice with each one of them.
Pricing and availability
The Elago W5 Watch Stand is priced at $14.99 on Amazon and $15.99 on Elago’s website. It is available for order today, albeit only in black and light grey at the time of this post. Bear in mind that you’ll need to use your own Apple Watch charger with the W5. Meaning you’ll need to fork over around $20 to grab an additional charger, if needed.
