Nintendo Switch is now the fastest selling console in the U.S., according to NDP. While reports suggested it might not actually hit the worldwide sales goal it had previously targeted, the U.S. numbers Nintendo is reporting today are looking good. That, on top of stellar software numbers fueled by the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, is leaving the company with good footing leading in to 2019. Head below for all the details.
To be more specific, Nintendo Switch is the fastest selling console of this generation in the U.S. over the 21 month period it has been available. Released in March of 2017, there are now 8.7 million Switch consoles out in the wild in the U.S. Per NDP, Nintendo says this easily outpaces all other current generation hardware over the time frame in their respective life cycles.
Just to put that in context, Nintendo is certainly doing great stateside and overall, but it is still well behind Sony and Microsoft in the grand scheme of things with about $23 million sold worldwide. It might be true that Nintendo Switch is now the fastest selling console in the U.S., but it is well shy of the $80+ million worth of PS4 consoles that have been sold. It is also about 17 million units below Xbox One on the world scale.
Nonetheless, things are looking up in Kyoto. Nintendo’s hardware unit and dollar sales for 2018 are at the best they have been since the insanely popular Wii started to lose steam in 2011. The eShop sales are apparently up 105% across 2017, but Switch games are lighting up the sales charts this season as well.
Smash Bros. Ultimate Flying Off Store Shelves
The new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game of all-time. In fact, it is also the fastest selling Smash Bros. game of all-time having clocked more than 3 million units sold in the first 11 days of availability. Those numbers come from Nintendo’s internal sales data. That could mean we see Super Smash Ultimate overtake the system’s current U.S best-sellers before long:
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe over 5 million units
- Super Mario Odyssey over 4.7 million units
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild over 4 million units
While it may not still maintain the dominance it enjoyed during the Wii days, things are going great for Nintendo’s new hybrid console platform. With rumors of a new version of the Switch coming soon and a fantastic year with the NES/SNES Classics, it will likely only get better from here.
