The Nemeio E ink keyboard looks to shake things up with customizable, app-specific layouts

Nemeio E Ink Keyboard

While CES is known for unveiling notable new products from some of the biggest names out there, it’s also a place for up and coming brands to showcase their latest wares as well. One of those companies is Nemio, who is detailing its new E ink keyboard in Las Vegas. Made for designers and power users, this unique input device is fully customizable with each key available for various user-defined functions. More below.

When used in tandem with its in-house software, the Nemeio E ink keyboard could be the next powerhouse for designers and the like. Each key is transparent with a small display behind it, which can be customized for various activities. For example, if you regularly call up Photoshop on your Mac or PC, having a dedicated shortcut would save you some time. The same can be said for various macros and other automated tasks regularly called upon during the day.

With Nemeio, you can modify the characters as you wish: QWERTY, AZERTY, Bépo, in French, Spanish with the shortcuts of your favorite software… you are free to customize it thanks to its dedicated application, wherever you want.

Not only are there customizable keys, but the entire keyboard can be changed to accommodate personal preferences. So if a user would like to switch from QWERTY to AZERTY or Bépo, that can easily be done. Different applications can also be made to trigger different layouts, for example, if you were in Photoshop or Final Cut Pro.

This wireless keyboard is charged via USB-C and connects with Bluetooth, not a proprietary medium. It’s also designed to work with various TVs, streaming media players and more, in addition to both Mac and PC.

Heavy competition in the market already

While it’s certainly nice to see some innovation in this category, Nemeio is entering a very crowded space. Big names like Logitech, Das Keyboard and others have long owned this category. And those looking for on-the-fly customization are more likely to reach for products like Elgato’s Stream Deck.

Consider that Nemeio is slated to retail its new keyboard for as much as $500, which is likely to be a tough sell. That said, there’s a lot to love about a product that is looking to shake up a rather played out category. I for one welcome some innovation among the current, rather dull, collection of keyboards on the market today.

The Nemeio E ink keyboard is slated to retail for between $300 and $500 when it hits the market in Q3 or Q4. Details are still a bit thin in terms of timeline, but Nemeio is promising a 2019 launch.
