Lexar 1TB SD Card

When it comes to taking photos or shooting video on your camera, generally speaking, an SD card will be your go-to storage method. With video files (and photos) only increasing in size as the resolutions climb, it’s getting harder and harder to shoot lengthy sessions of either photos or videos without having multiple cards around. With Lexar’s 1TB SDXD card, that’s a worry of the past.

Lexar announces a 1TB SDXC UHS-1 card

There were already plenty of 256GB and even 512GB SD cards on the market. It’s always talked about that SDXC, which stands for “Secure Digital eXtreme Capacity”, could go up to a theoretical 2TB maximum amount of storage space. Until now, however, that always seemed like a distant dream to me.

This new SD card is the first of its kind, though other companies have talked about 1TB cards in the past. The major difference here is that Lexar’s model is already available for pre-order at B&H, and is even listed on its own website.

You’ll get speeds of up to 95MB/s which is fast enough to use this for 4K video recording and will make shooting longer films much easier for many. Until now, if you wanted to shoot a longer video session, you’d have to rely on things like external SSD recorders or multiple cards. Now, you can trim down the number of cards needed with this massive 1TB model.

Another great use for a card like this would be storing extra data on a computer that still sports an SD card slot. Though it’s a rare breed these days, many older devices have SD slots that allow the card to sit flush with the computer’s body. A 1TB SD card like this could help expand the storage of that machine without having to worry about taking it apart and replacing the existing hard drive and reinstalling Windows. Plus, it’s easier than carrying around a 1TB external hard drive.

Pricing and availability

Lexar says that it’s officially available starting now at $499, though B&H has it listed for pre-order at $399.99. Regardless, you’re going to be set back a few hundred bucks to purchase this, which is to be expected since a 512GB model currently runs around $130. Though this is more than double the price, you’re getting the convenience of not having to switch SD cards nearly as often is that’s something you find yourself doing all the time.
