Nintendo just officially confirmed the release date for its upcoming live-action Zelda movie!

Release date
Legend of Zelda movie

Way back in November of 2023 Nintendo issued an open letter on behalf of itself and Sony Pictures to announce that a live-action Zelda film was in the works. Details and development updates on the project have been largely quiet since then, but it has now confirmed an official release for the upcoming live-action Zelda movie!

Nintendo announces release date for the upcoming live-action Zelda movie!

Despite the fact that Nintendo specifically said it was working on a Zelda movie, anyone who follows these sorts of early film project announcements knows how tumultuous development can get – they don’t always come to fruition, and even if they do it can take years and years to actually happen.

We certainly weren’t holding our breath in the wild for this one, but now, as part of a recent update spotted in the official new Nintendo Today! app, it looks like the live-action Zelda movie is actually on the way.

During yesterday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo showcased some gameplay footage of Metroid Prime 4 and the new Pokémon game, but it also debuted Nintendo Today! – its brand new iOS and Android app designed to deliver daily news to the Mushroom Kingdom on all things Nintendo.

Folks already spotted it leaking the mysterious “C” button on Switch 2 Joy-Con, and now it has provided an official release date for the upcoming Zelda movie.

If you open up the new Nintendo Today! app on your phone right now, you’ll be graced with a short teaser video, a particularly sweet 8-bit-style rendition of the iconic Zelda theme, and a screen reading as follows:

I personally wish it was very much not a live action film and something more akin to recent hit Super Mario Bros. movie, but we will have to wait and see if Nintendo and Sony completely botch the look and feel here before I weigh in.

But that’s about it – there are no other details here. Here’s what Miyamoto had to say about the project back when it was first unleashed way back when:

This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films.

I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.

The film will be produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., and directed by Wes Ball. The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., with more than 50% financed by Nintendo. The theatrical distribution of the film will be done worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

By getting deeply involved in the movie production with the aim to put smiles on everyone’s faces through entertainment, Nintendo will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment and deliver it to as many people as possible.
