Holiday season is when console makers tend to ship a ton of units. They’re a popular gift idea that’s pretty much guaranteed to be a slam dunk no matter which age group you’re buying for. This rings especially true with Nintendo, as it can appeal to kids, adults, and even elderly folks as well. So it’s not crazy to wonder why Nintendo would release Switch 2 during the spring or summer. Continue reading to find out what time of year Nintendo and other console makers tend to unleash their new systems.

Is spring or summer an odd time of year to release Nintendo Switch 2?

Well, not really. It may seem counterintuitive, but this is similar to how Nintendo released the current Switch last time around. In fact, it was unleashed a bit earlier, on March 3, 2017. This is precisely the opposite of how Sony and Microsoft released consoles, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S both landing in the middle of November 2020.

While one might think that holiday season is a better bet, my money says that Nintendo knows there will be enough die-hard fans to sell out of the console no matter what time of the year it is. By releasing well ahead of the holidays, it can sell through the first several batches of Switch 2 and perhaps keep up with demand.

Plus, it’s important to remember that a lot of folks don’t live and breathe this sort of thing like most of us do. They won’t realize a new Nintendo Switch 2 even exists right away, let alone know why they may want to upgrade. Getting it out several months in advance of the holiday season may help whet the appetite for these people, keeping demand high throughout all of 2025 and beyond.

All in all, I think it makes a lot of sense for Nintendo to get Switch 2 out as soon as possible. And from the looks of it, a pre-order leak from earlier this week may imply that we’ll be getting it sooner rather than later. I’m all for it, I just hope there are more colorways to pick from at launch, because I personally think that the style we’ve seen so far is bland and boring.
