The top consumer headphone manufacturers are constantly releasing new and updated models of their most popular offerings in order to get you to buy a new set. However, Danish electronics company AiAiAi is looking to break the cycle with its new TMA-2 modular headphone system.
Based off the success of the previous gen TMA-1 models, this new system allows consumers to hand pick the various elements of the headphones to create a pair that better fits their listening preferences.
There are four configurable elements: the headband, speaker units, earpads and cables, each having a different effect on the overall sound or feel of the headphones. While the three headband and six cable choices won’t directly change the sound of the headphones, there are as many as 20 different sound profile choices available with the various driver and earpad options. The company has a handy “Sound Profile” graph on its site so you can visualize how your choices will change the sound of the headphones.
While the company is specifically focused on function over form at this point, it will be easy for AiAiAi to integrate more color options in the future. There are also DJ, Studio, All-Rounder and other preset options available for those not looking to build their own.
Fortunately, the company hasn’t left its TMA-1 users in the dust either, the new components found in the TMA-2 system are compatible with previous gen models as well.
Including both the custom configurable sets and the preset options, the new TMA-2 headphones go for between $145 and $250, and are available to order now at AiAiAi.dk.
