Gold is Best: This one-off Macintosh is a must see with its walnut enclosure and shiny keyboard

The original Macintosh 128k remains to be one of the most beloved products to come out of Apple’s design labs. The iconic design started a revolution of portable personal computers that spawned generations of new products. One-off electronics designer Love Hultén has set out to honor this old-school computer with his own take. Just by the looks of its wooden enclosure, he nailed it. But that keyboard though…

Hultén made a near-perfect replica of the original Macintosh out of walnut, which he calls the “Golden Apple”. Every detail looks spot on from the fan slots to the ports. The walnut and metal make for a striking one-of-a-kind look. Instead of using plastic for the keyboard, he used zinc and then gold-plated each individual piece. Hulté’s bright yellow color scheme pops off the wooden enclosure. Every key is backed by a blue cherry MX tactile switch for an extra clickity-clack feel.

You won’t find an original Macintosh on the inside. Hultén opted for a Mac mini and even put an optical drive in the typical floppy location. A small display is hooked up and the entire rig is functional. The whole package truly is a beautiful representation of one of Apple’s all-time great designs.

Don’t expect to see one of these in person any time soon. Like the rest of Love Hultén’s projects, this is just a one-of-a-kind piece. But, if you’re feeling nostalgic, we recommend checking out Iconic: A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation. This is one of our favorite books that has been released on Apple products. It provides an in-depth look at the design and story behind many of Steve Jobs’ exemplary releases through the years.
