Destiny 2 reveal trailer, release date, limited edition details, more

While we have known for some time Destiny 2 was to be unveiled soon, Bungie and Activision have now released the official reveal trailer (below). Along with a release date, we get a great look at the game, some information about the beta and the limited/collector’s editions, along with some light details on the story and more.

Destiny’s first outing was certainly an ambitious one – blending the online MMO and space shooter genres for consoles – and received its fair share of criticism along the way. Some players feel as though its leveling, balancing and loot systems got a little messy in the late game, but Bungie is looking to give players a fresh start with D2. While some may have preferred the developer to adjust the system so they could continue with their current character build, you will be starting from scratch in Destiny 2.

A really bad dude by the name of Ghaul is trying to wipe humanity out with the evil Red Legion and players must band together “scattered heroes…and fight back to reclaim our home.” Here are more details directly from Bungie:

Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion. He has stripped the city’s Guardians of their power, and forced the survivors to flee. You will venture to mysterious, unexplored worlds of our solar system to discover an arsenal of weapons and devastating new combat abilities. To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home.

The official reveal trailer is unfortunately gameplay-free, but do we get a glimpse into the basic story set-up here with returning characters Cayde and Zavala. Nolan North also confirmed he will be returning in some way or other as your Ghost companion. There will be a gameplay reveal on May 18th.

Along with the Digital Deluxe, Limited and Collector’s Editions detailed below, Destiny will have a season pass containing Expansion Pass I and Expansion Pass II. Bungie says both of which will offer new story missions, cooperative activities, multiplayer elements and loads of new weapons and gear.

The Digital Deluxe version comes with an in-game Legendary sword, emote, and Cabal-themed emblem. The Limited Edition includes the complete Expansion Pass, SteelBook, a Cabal-themed Collector’s Box with all-sorts of physical goodies and the same digital content as the Digital Deluxe version. The Collector’s Edition will run you $250, comes with everything mentioned above and a whole bunch more. Everything is listed below.

As expected, PlayStation 4 owners will be getting exclusive content. Sony released its own (identical) version of the reveal trailer saying as much. The only details we have thus far are listed as “timed exclusive content until at least Fall 2018.”

Destiny 2 drops on September 8th. Those who pre-order will be selected first for the open beta kicking off this summer. Prime members can already pre-order the game at 20% off: $47.99 shipped (Reg. $60) and the Limited/Collector’s Editions are up for pre-order at GameStop (stock limited).

Fortunately, for all those PC gamers that missed out the first time around,  Activision and Bungie will be releasing Destiny 2 for PC on day one.
