8Bitdo rolls out free Nintendo Switch support for all its retro-style controllers

As we all know by now, the Switch has been a massive success for Nintendo. Despite some of the reservations around the time of the unveil pertaining to what seemed like a gimmicky controller setup, Switch is for the most part a massive win for gamers as well. However, some of us still prefer the more classic D-pads for certain games. There is just something about the classic NES/SNES-style setup that just continues to be the ideal input mechanism for fighters, some 2-D platformers and other archetypical 90’s era experiences.

Thankfully, one of the bigger players in the third party controller game is looking to provide us with a simple solution. 8Bitdo makes loads of awesome vintage-inspired controllers and is now pushing out firmware updates packed with Nintendo Switch support…

That means owners of the company’s popular gamepads including the NES30, SNES30, FC30 Pro and more, can now use the controllers with Nintendo Switch. Now if it wasn’t obvious, we are only getting basic control here. 8Bitdo won’t be firing off rumble tech, motion controls and virtual amiibo teleportation devices over the air or anything. Nonetheless, this is a pretty sweet, and very free update for existing owners.

Several reports suggest the update is working great with Switch, but not all models are entirely compatible by the sounds of it. It appears as though 8Bitdo can only guarantee full support (after the update) on its pro-model controllers like the NES30 Pro and FC30 Pro. However, the other options will work on some games.

While the provided, first party controllers will likely work just fine for most users, with the release of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers on Nintendo Switch this Friday, timing really couldn’t be better for hardcore gamers. It is easy to see the compatibility come in handy for other retro titles like the SNK fighters and classic platformers as well.

The 8Bitdo NES30 Pro and the FC30 Pro will run you $42.99 shipped each on Amazon. But you can grab the NES30 with a carrying case for the same price right here. Both of which carry 4+ star ratings and work on a myriad of other platforms as well, including iOS, Android, Mac, Windows and more.

Existing owners can download the new firmware update right here.
