The 4K projector market is far more complex than finding a suitable Ultra HDTV. Prices are steep and features can be confusing to compare. Epson is looking to simplify these worries with its new “affordable” Home Cinema 4000 Projector. Despite a bevy of notable features including full 4K and HDR, the latest home theater creation from Epson still comes in at over $2,199. And while that may seem like a steep price, it comes in at $800 less than the brand’s previous low-end model. More details, features and a full press release can be found below.

Despite being billed as a 4K projector, there are still some behind the scenes trickiness happening to achieve this feature. Epson uses a technology called Pixel Shifting that upscales 1080p content to 4K resolutions. Users can expect to see that level of detail on screens up to 25-feet in size. This difference is denoted by the 4Ke logo that you’ll find on the unit, which stands for 4K Enhancement.

Epson offers a number of other features alongside its unique 4K capabilities. That includes support for HDR 10, which brings enhanced contrast to your content no matter the source. Epson’s new Home Cinema 4000 Projector sports a native 140,000:1 contrast ratio. The replaceable bulb pumps out 2,200 lumens of total power that should serve movie fanatics well in a variety of lighting situations.

Rounding out the list of unique features is Epson’s 3LCD engine that is designed to separate out colors individually rather than being broadcast together, like most DLP systems. This allows users to recreate a wide-range of colors, in fact, that number may be higher than some consumer TVs.

The $2,199 price tag includes two HDMI inputs and an optical audio output, so you’ll have a few connectivity options. Projectors are generally behind TVs in this regard, so this is hardly a surprise.

While TVs continue to close the gap between image quality and size, projectors remain the best way to bring home that truly large screen movie theater experience. The newest model from Epson bumps down the price tag even further than what we’ve seen from previous releases. But with 4K content largely lagging behind hardware availability, it will still likely be sometime before this medium truly hits the mainstream. Added with a still pricier-than-a-TV price point and Epson may still be facing an up hill battle with its projector line for some time.
