Companies love to re-release games with updated graphics and storylines, similar to how Star Wars: Battlefront II was recently in open beta. However, often this doesn’t bode well with players as the game is nothing like the original. Well, Microsoft seems to have (somewhat) fixed that problem, and it’s launching tomorrow. Announced back at E3 alongside the Xbox One X, Microsoft said they would be making some original Xbox titles work on the Xbox One. That was the last we heard of it until recently, and now we have a list of 13 games that will be compatible with the Xbox One.
You’ll be able to play the games if you have the physical disk, digital download on your account, or if you purchase them from $9.99 from the Xbox Store. All of the games have been updated to run at 1080P and also updated with either faster or smoother framerates. You will also be able to enjoy faster loading times with the newly re-released games, as well.
These games haven’t been re-done with new stories, new plot lines, or anything. They are the same games you grew up with on the original Xbox, just with better graphics. You can even still System Link with multiple devices. Reports say you can System link between an original Xbox, Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One S all at the same time. Sadly, multiplayer servers for online gaming were shut down several years ago.
Now, onto what everyone wanted to read: the game list! Below you’ll find the first 13 games that will be backward compatible with the Xbox and Xbox One.
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- Fuzion Frenzy
- Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Ninja Gaiden Black
- Psychonauts
- Dead to Rights
- Black
- Sid Meier’s Pirates!
- BloodRayne 2
- The King of Fighters Neowave
- Red Faction 2
- Grabbed by the Ghoulies
As you can probably tell, Star Wars: KOTOR is my favorite pick from these titles. I’ve logged countless hours in that game on both console and PC and enjoyed every second of it. Most of the games will run at 4:3 aspect as that’s what they were designed in, so don’t think you’re getting a complete overhaul of the game.
We do expect more games to come as time progresses, but no news from Microsoft what games those will be. Being that most Xbox games are quite old, many studios have shut down, or contracts lost as they were never digitized.
Bringing original Xbox titles to Xbox One isn’t where Microsoft stops in nostalgia lately, though. Last month there was word that Microsoft was re-releasing the original Duke controller for Xbox One / PC, which would go along perfect with these age-old console ports!
