Nokia may be known for its cellphones of the past, but over the years the Finnish company has branched out to release a variety of health-focused smartphone accessories. And last week, the lineup of Wi-Fi equipped scales, thermometers and blood pressure monitors expanded with the announcement of the Nokia Sleep, an all-in-one device that monitors your night’s rest alongside boasting smart home capabilities and more.
Following the success of wrist-mounted sleep tracking devices, external, smartphone monitors have gained popularity over the years as well. And while we’ve seen a variety of these accessories come to market in the past, Nokia’s latest announcement offers a different and distinct take on what a sleep tracking device can be.
Nokia Sleep is based around a thin pad that you place underneath your mattress to collect data on how long and well you’ve slept. The companion app analyzes your information and then provides a sleep score to quantify your night in more than just raw info. Along with sleep cycle tracking, it also monitors snoring patterns.
As of now, Nokia’s Health Mate app sports Apple Health compatibility so all of your data can be stored in one place. But with the launch of Sleep, the app will add in support for Amazon Alexa, meaning you’ll be able to query your assistant with questions like “How well did I sleep last night?” or “Did I get enough sleep last night?”.
The sleep monitor’s biggest selling point outside of its accurate tracking capabilities is the integration with the popular automation service IFTTT. This bridges this gap between those concerned with tracking health data and early smart home owners. Thanks to this feature, you’ll be able to dim your lights when you get into bed, turn up the heat and even arm your security system.
There’s a wide range of possibilities, making it just as desirable a device for smart home enthusiasts as it is health-conscience individuals. While it may seem a little overboard, the addition of IFTTT support will go a long way for justifying the sleep tracker over your existing Fitbit or Apple Watch.
Nokia’s latest health monitor will launch sometime in the first quarter of the year with a sub $100 price tag. At just $99.95, the tracker is certainly more affordable than other options we’ve seen.
And with its affordable asking price, rich set of features and unobtrusive design, I’m optimistic that the Nokia Sleep will be a big hit in a variety of markets. While those interested in their sleeping stats are an obvious example, I could even see smart home adopters picking up Sleep solely to bring bedtime and wakeup automations to their abodes.
