Leica is a huge name in the camera industry, behind some of the best designs to hit the market over the last one hundred years. The brand’s willingness to think outside the box has delivered countless hits. Today, Leica introduced a new limited edition version of its popular M-Series Monochrom camera. Dressed in nearly all black, it sports the kind of luxury vibe other brands can only dream of. Even better? It glows in the dark.
In typical Leica fashion, this type of design won’t come cheap. The new Stealth Edition of the Monochrom Typ 246 will sell for $15,760. That’s a hefty 100% markup from the standard edition, but for some, the visuals may be worth the sticker shock.
Most notably, the new version ships with a bundled lens, which is a $3,000 value alone. The Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH optic is not included on the base model version, so that works the limited edition price tag down to a $5,000 markup.
Back to that special edition paint job. In regular light, the Stealth covering looks like an all-black camera. Turn off the lights and the specially made paint begins to glow. The paint itself is a matte finish that is said to be scratch-resistant, a feature we’d sure hope would be included on a $15,000 camera.
We’ve seen limited edition models of the Type M before, with the most recent one popping up late last year. There’s something about the simplistic design that really lends itself to custom colorways. In fact, today’s release will be limited to just 125 units worldwide. The collaboration has been handled in conjunction with Rag & Bone founder Marcus Wainwright. This adds an extra level of notoriety for a sleek build that’s already eye-catching.
Leicha first introduced the Monochrom camera back in 2012 with additional updates coming in 2015, resulting in the current version that’s being hawked today.
Features includes full support for 1080p and Leica’s in-house 24MP sensor. It delivers images with great detail according to the manufacturer, thanks to an ISO range that hits upwards of 6400. Throwback manual designs on the top offer that signature Leica style that we’ve come to know and love. The M series is compatible with all of Leica’s in-house R-Lenses, as well.
The new Stealth Edition Monochrom is available starting from today at Leica’s retail locations stateside in Bellevue, Boston, Las Vegas and Washington DC. If you’re interested, be sure to act fast as all 125 units are expected to sell out quickly.
