GoPro partners with Jabil to create third-party cameras and accessories

GoPro is probably a name that everyone knows by now. The company makes action cameras, and basically everyone loves them. GoPro recently struck a deal with its sensor maker, Jabil, for a multi-year agreement on licensing GoPro’s reference design and IP. What does this mean though? Well, read on to find out more.

GoPro has partnered with Jabil since the HERO4 on imaging sensors. Starting now, there is a multi-year technology and equipment license between the two companies. This agreement gives Jabil the ability to take advantage of GoPro’s design and intellectual property for third-party products and solutions.

With this new-found ability, Jabil will be able to manufacture products like cameras, lenses, and other similarly designed consumer style products. Obviously, Jabil won’t produce cameras that directly compete with GoPro, but the imaging sector is a wide playing field and there’s plenty of retail space to go around.

“Early market feedback indicates strong demand in the enterprise action camera segment for applications in smart homes, military, fire, police, rescue, and security.” said Irv Stein, Jabil’s Vice President of Optics.

Some areas we could imagine Jabil taking this new-found partnership to are things like Smart TV’s and systems similar to the Echo Show. This could really be a game changer when it comes to the smart home space.

GoPro has long made great sensors and other camera accessories that are both rugged and high-quality. I really am excited to see where this partnership leads.
