Gnarbox 2.0 arrives with SSD storage, USB-C connectivity, more for $249

Gnarbox hit the scene awhile back with its first-generation portable hard drive that allows content creators to back up movies and pictures on-the-spot after being captured. But this isn’t your average hard drive. Gnarbox went a step further with a fully integrated processor that enables instant editing of content long before you’re back at a Mac or PC. Even better, it’s wrappped in a rugged casing that’s both shock- and dust-proof for just about any scenario.

Today, Gnarbox has introduced the second generation of its portable storage solution that features a slimmed-down design, new connectivity along with a built-in solid-state drive for faster storage and transfers.

The new Gnarbox 2.0 hits the market today with a few key upgrades that content creators are sure to love. Looking forward with USB-C connectivity and a built-in SSD delivers speeds of up to 450MB/s. Not bad for a portable hard drive. If you’re someone that’s regularly capturing 4K content, this upgrade is going to make a world of difference in comparison to the previous generation model.

Additional upgrades on the hardware side of things include a SD card slot and 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which is a nice complement to the changes referenced above. A microHDMI port allows content to be viewed just about anywhere, if you’re anxious to show-off your shots prior to uploading elsewhere.

Gnarbox continues to market itself as a rugged solution for active lifestyles. The outer case has been redesigned with better grip and is rated for IP67, which makes it safe for outdoor activities.

  • Intel® Quad Core, 1.92GHZ CPU
  • 4 Core Intel ® HD Graphics GPU
  • Dual band 300mbps 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • SD Card Slots and USB3.0 ports allow 100MB/sec backup speeds & 270MB/sec export speeds
  • 1 AMP Out per USB
  • Compatible with CF Card Readers
  • 128GB FLASH Memory

Along with the today’s new hardware, Gnarbox is also refreshing things on the software side as well. Four new mobile apps will be hitting devices this week led by Selects that allows for RAW compatibility, color correction and an updated preview mode. There’s also dedicated apps coming down the line for Final Cut and premiere, along with utilities for backing up your work away from home.

The new Gnarbox 2.0 SSD launched on Kickstarter with significant interest. In one day it’s raised over $190,000 alone, with more sure to come in the following weeks.

The plan at this point is to ship orders to backers in December. Bundles start at $249 and go up from there. Gnarbox is an established company with a solid history of product development, but as always be sure to exercise caution with any crowdfunding products.
