LEGO Ideas unveils its latest crowd-funded set, the new brick-built Pop-Up Book

At the beginning of May, we took a look at the next ten potential LEGO Ideas kits. And while it’ll still be until later this fall before any of these builds gain the company’s approval, today LEGO did announce its third round of results from Ideas kits submitted last year.

Of the seven builds that managed to lock in 10,000 supporters in the third part of 2017, only one was inevitably chosen to hit store shelves as a bona-fide LEGO kit; the fan-favorite Pop-Up Book.

The all-new Pop-Up Book is a result of two great LEGO builders, Jason of JKBrickworks and Grant Davis, joining forces to create the technically impressive set. It was submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform back in August 2016 and nearly a year and half later was able to gain the support it needed for LEGO to consider the build.

As the build’s name suggests, the set is comprised of an outer shell resembling a hardcover book which is then filled with variously themed structures that let builders create their own adventures. As one opens the book, the insides spring to life, erecting an entirely LEGO-made playset.

Ranging from medieval scenes to cowboy-filled western sets, the Pop-Up Book kit is an ingenious take and the internal builds pack loads of charm. When paired with the kits pop-up functionality, this one of the most all-around creative builds we’ve seen to date.

While there are currently several different themed book playsets so far, there’s no telling if LEGO will decide to add any more or just replace them to fit its lineup of available kits. Builds that get the seal of approval from the Ideas team aren’t finalized, so expect some variations between Jason and Grant’s design compared to the model that will be hitting store shelves in the near future.

LEGO has noted that the new Pop-Up Book is slated to arrive sometime in the summer of 2018, so fans anxious to get their hands on the kit won’t have too long to wait. As of now, we’re unaware of how much LEGO plans to charge for the set. They could opt to make one all-encompassing kit that includes tons of pieces to craft multiple books, or separate them into individually themed sets.

Whichever way LEGO plans to go, the Pop-Up Book is sure to be a hit. I still remember seeing the model for the first time back in 2016 and being amazed by its technical engineering. And the fact that LEGO is confident it can capture the same charm and functionality in a mass-production set means that we’re in for a real treat this summer.
