A lot of folks, including myself, need to charge our USB devices away from an AC outlet. Whether it is for installing a USB camera in a remote location or doing work in a barn or shed that doesn’t have power or just being mobile outside and off grid, a USB Solar array is a great way to get that power you need without running ugly and costly wires.
Unfortunately, the sun only shines during the day and only will give you enough direct charge when those days are sunny. For the rest of the time, you’ll need to store that sunny electricity for use 24/7/365.
That’s where these nice EasyAcc discounted products come in. Solar Panel:
The EasyAcc Solar Panel is better than the garden variety fold out because it had 4 panels instead of the usual 3 meaning the Wattage jumps from 21W to 28W. That enables EasyAcc to allow simultaneous direct charging of 4 different devices and will even charge 2 devices at 2.4A each meaning that you’ll get a quicker charge on most devices. If you want to go a little cheaper, here are two smaller panels from Aukey but their charging capabilities are greatly diminished and it isn’t easy to recommend for this application:
Also, AT&T has a big “buy 3 accessories, get 20% off” thing going so if you get 3 things (including 3 of these keyboards for $24) you get 20% off your total meaning this is $8. No brainer.

UPDATE: You can also find the Mohu Re-Leaf for $30 with code CRUSHCABLE at Mohu.
We’ve had some great HDTV Antenna deals in the past but this might be the best ever with one that hits all the checkpoints and coming in at a super-low price.
These are great for bringing in local channels (~25 mile radius) without having to drop insane prices on cable bills and cable boxes. You hook it right into your HDTV, program some channels and voila: free TV forever. At $8 shipped, this wanders way into no brainer territory. Even if you aren’t a cord cutter, this serves as a great backup in case of cable outage or emergencies. Great for Dads and Grads.

Woot via Amazon offers the Motorola SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem and 802.11AC Wi-Fi Router (model SBG6782AC, refurb) for $74.99 with free shipping. As a pricing comparison, it typically sells for about $185-$220 and has never been lower than today’s deal. Standalone cable modems and wireless routers are frequently on sale, but we rarely see a combo unit like this one from Motorola receive a significant price drop. This modem will pay for itself within a year because the router you are renting from your cable company can cost as much as $10/month.
Not only does this gadget simplify your network setup, but it should also increase wireless performance and prevent connection drop outs. Rated 4 out of 5 stars from 700 Amazon reviewers. Other features and tech specs can be seen below.
This week, Daily Steals offers the iPhone 5 16GB refurb w/Otterbox Defender Blazed Phone Case for $99.99 shipped. That’s the first time we’ve ever seen an iPhone 5 below the $100 threshold and adding the Otterbox Defender case is the icing on the cake.

There is no better tablet deal out there than the Kindle Fire 7-inch IPS display tablet for $49.99 shipped. Sure it is all baseline specs, the front and back cameras aren’t amazing and it only has 8GB of storage. It runs FireOS instead of Google’s full Android which isn’t a bad thing if you don’t need Google’s apps.
But that doesn’t mean it still isn’t a great consumption machine for $50 (or 6 pack for $250!). You get Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime videos and music. Tons of Appstore apps and Amazon’s best selection of eBooks on the planet. Amazon also offers a free paid app every day.
Today Amazon gives more options to those in the $50 tablet market. Besides black, you can grab the playful magenta, blue, and tangerine colors and for $20 more you can get a 16GB option (also available on the ruggedized kids version w/2 year garantee)
Customers can now choose between three new colors: magenta, blue, and tangerine, as well as black—and still for only $49.99. Fire is also available with 16 GB of internal storage for only $69.99.
Also starting today, Fire Kids Edition, the tablet built from the ground up for kids (and their parents), is available with a new green kid-proof case (already available in pink or blue) and with 16 GB of internal storage for $119.99. Fire Kids Edition with 8 GB of internal storage will continue to be available for only $99.99.
I’ll be honest, I like the colors but I’m not sure I’m in on a 40% increase in price for 8GB of storage. The Kindle Fire also has MicroSD storage which means you can certainly store your media more cheaply with a MicroSD card. That same $20 buys you a 64GB MicroSD card that you can also throw into a GoPro, Raspberry Pi or Android phone.
If you are an Apple Watch/Sport owner, you probably already know the value in having a few different easy-to-switch watch bands around. Sport bands are great for outdoor fun but a nice Leather band cleans up your Sport and turns it into a night on the town or formal event type of timepiece.
But Apple charges $149 for Leather magnetic clasp bands which is more than half the price of an Apple Watch Sport on sale these days. What if I told you you could get a great knockoff of the Apple Watch Leather Band at a tenth of the price for just $14.49 Prime Shipped after $14.99 coupon code 9JGNFFVF. You can also pick up a well-rated Milanese Loop knockoff for $12.99 Prime shipped. Thesecertainly won’t be as good as Apple’s but at a tenth of the $149 retail price of Apple’s you can afford to take a little bit of a risk.
These come with 18 month warranty and are fulfilled by Amazon. Comes in Apple’s 5 colors and in both 38mm and 42mm sizes.
If you are an Apple Watch Sport owner, you probably already know the value in having a few different easy-to-switch watch bands around. Sport bands are great for outdoor fun but a nice Milanese Loop band cleans up your Sport and turns it into a night on the town or formal event type of timepiece.
We’ve (almost) never seen a quality USB 3 enclosure for under $10 so this is a pretty monumental deal on something almost everyone should have a use for. If you have old laptops with still usefull hard drives or portable SSDs/hard drives lying around, you can pop them in the $7 enclosure and have yourself a speedy mass storage in a compact package.
Even better, take advantage of some of Electronicsforward’ best naked SSD finds and pop that speed demon in this USB->SATA1/2/3 enclosure for quick access to a lot of data. Here’s a Samsung 500GB for $135 or a Sandisk 1TB for $200
I bought one of these so I know many of you out there will be interested.

Update: Amazon says 1080P but Samsung’s site says 720P. We’ll assume 720P It doesn’t have any bells and whistles but hey it is a 1080P S19D300NY display from Samsung new at Amazon via Triplenet Pricing for $59.99 shipped. That’s not a misprint, I even screenshotted it for when it dies in 20 minutes below. It only has a VGA…
The Prius powering our home during Hurricane Sandy
Our town got hit hard during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Our home lost power for almost 2 weeks and I hadn’t purchased a generator for our house. Time to move into a hotel, right?
Nope.
I had a couple of small inverters and a Toyota Prius with a full 10 gallon tank of gas that kept our house lit and computers/phones/internet on for the better part of 2 weeks. I even had enough power for some Halloween lights…
I love the SolarTab (original review) and I hit up the German company that makes the huge solar panel/battery the size of an iPad for a coupon for you guys. It’s here! Exclusive Coupon Code SOLTAB35 drops the price $35 to an all time low of $94 shippedat Amazon.
Key Details:
5.5W Solar panel w/dual 2.1A USB ports
13,000mAh battery will provide a few full iPads worth of power when the sun goes out
Fits perfectly in bags next to books and iPads
Looks great and built to last
Why is the Solartab great? Because it actually works. If you’ve ever tried to charge your iPhones/iPads/etc. directly from a small solar panel you probably know it is pretty difficult. Even with direct sunlight, you aren’t likely to be able to charge the device reliably or quickly. Most USB-charged devices require a minimum of 5W (5Vx1A) of continuous power to even register a charge. Then a cloud comes or the sun moves and you aren’t charging anymore.
Adding a battery to the mix helps, especially if the battery is big and can charge the device quickly on its own without any sun. But most of the solar/battery combos fall into 2 categories: Either messy because they are a bulky 2 step solution or the solar panel is too small to make a meaningful charge and you are mostly using it like a regular USB battery.
SolarTab is a breath of fresh air here. It is a relatively big 5.5W solar panel built on a thin 13,000mAh battery enclosure that fits in an included Moleskine-esque case. Size-wise, think the original iPad with a nice leather case and a huge solar panel instead of a screen.
This is the perfect large battery for a number of reasons. Because it is so thin, it fits like a book (or iPad!) in a backpack, briefcase or large purse. Most importantly, it always has power. I leave mine on my windowsill for when I need to go into the city (usually 1-2 times per week). My iPhone and iPad usually die with heavy use so it’s a lifesaver for my trips home. What’s great is that I don’t ever have to plug it in. A few days in the window will have me back to full for my next trip…
What this is is a large flashlight that has a 2.1A USB port that will quickly charge a phone 2-4 times over with its huge 6000mAh battery pack (erroneously listed elsewhere at 12,000mAh). That battery will also jump start your 3L or smaller engine car 10 times with its 12V jumper cable adapter (It can also be used for other 12V applications). It sounds like a great in car device but it also functions as a safety helper with a hammer head for breaking glass and a bright flashing red beacon light that functions as a flare.
The full 2.4 pound package includes “Anker Multi-Functional Car Jump Starter External Battery, 15V adapter, 15V car adapter, car adapter charging base, jumper clamps, welcome guide, 18-month warranty and friendly customer service”.
Amazon offers its Prime members 3 free months of Audible which includes 3 free books. Note: this is for customers who haven’t already connected their Amazon account to their Audible account. The offer will get you into May for 3 free audio books. It might even be that last reason to get into Amazon Prime (If…
It is a mouthful but let me go “ShamWow” on you real quick. At $13, a 10,000mAh dual USB 2A battery is a great deal. But this one is waterproof-ish and rugged too. Plus it has a built in LED light and LED battery indicator. And it has a solar panel on it so you can keep it charged with the sun. That would be a great deal for $13. But “if you act now”, they will throw in 2 USB lamps which you can use on your laptop too (nice if you don’t have backlit keys). At $13, this is a no brainer. I’m buying it just for the USB LED lights they are throwing in – which usually cost more than $13 by themselves.
Update (2/4 9:30am): Amazon Echo now supports Spotify Premium:
Amazon today announced that Spotify Premium subscribers in the U.S. can now listen to their music on Amazon Echo—just ask Alexa to play any playlist, artist, genre and more from Spotify’s catalog. And because Echo also supports Spotify Connect, customers can effortlessly transfer and control their listening experience from the Spotify app to Echo—just select Echo from the list of available devices within the Spotify app.
Amazon is updating its FireTV/Stick and Echo Smart Home Speaker ahead of the biggest US game of the year. The Fire TV Stick, which is currently on sale for $34.99 shipped (Reg. $40), will now stream audio to Bluetooth headphones “for private listening while watching your favorite movies, TV shows or gaming.” Alexa voice support will be delivered to first generation Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices.
Amazon will also push improvements to Amazon Video add-on subscription service, including an easier way to sign-up, discover and access your Amazon Video add-on subscriptions.
Since the launch of the new Fire TV in September, we’ve added dozens of Alexa skills to Fire TV devices including local search (i.e. the ability to find restaurants in your neighborhood), Amazon Choice and Re-Ordering from Amazon.com (i.e. quickly purchasing items off Amazon.com), home automation (i.e. turning on the living room lights via Alexa), traffic (i.e. find out how your commute to work is looking), Audible, games like Jeopardy!, Bingo, and more
Probably the coolest new feature coming to Amazon’s Echo Speaker is the ability to order pizza – you know, for the Super Bowl – with your voice…from the couch…without pulling out your phone! Even better, Newegg offers $5 off a $25 Domino’s gift card via email delivery, so you aren’t going to be paying full price either.
Amazon offers the Seagate Slim 4TB portable hard drive bundled with 200GB of cloud storage for $119.99 with free shipping. That’s $60 off retail and the lowest price we’ve seen for this very portable hard drive with massive 4TB of space. It is USB 3 fast and is bus powered meaning you don’t need to carry around power cables and it fits in a jacket/purse/bag pocket for convenient transport. Over 5,000 Amazon reviewers love this even at higher prices giving it an impressive 4.5/5 star rating.
In addition, Seagate offers 200GB of cloud storage for 2 years using its OneDrive account.
Update (2/16 5:20pm): Here are some fresh USB/Jump Starter deals. You must select OXA USA COM (w/ fulfillment by Amazon) as the seller and use coupon code UCSB794Q during checkout. Free shipping is available for Prime members and on orders of $35+.
Every few months, a new category of technology products emerge at unthinkable prices. Whether it is because of a new chipset or fresh manufacturing techniques or other inventions, it takes the market by storm. A few years ago it was Bluetooth speakers dropping in price and which are now almost ubiquitous for a few bucks each. Recently, I’ve seen LED desk lamps with USB ports from a few different manufacturers (current favs: Omaker and Anker) drop drastically in price and get USB ports alongside a variety of designs.
Probably the biggest “category buster” going on right now are USB batteries that have been retrofitted with heavy-gauge jumper cables to be able to start cars. It is a great secondary use for a USB product that is already ubiquitous. (Solar is another). Batteries that can jumpstart a car were previously heavy and used dangerous lead acid, with costs hitting over $100.
(un)Fortunately, I haven’t had a dead battery situation to test its capability. I did disconnect my car battery and was easily able to start my car (2012 Prius) with each of these batteries – which seems to fit the bill. If you have larger than a 3L engine, you’ll want to opt for the bigger 600A capable battery. Each of these is rated in the double digits in starts but hopefully just one will be enough.
Both chargers will also keep your USB devices charged in an emergency. If you have the extra money, I’d throw down for the larger, rugged battery. The 600A battery has an extra fast USB charging port, is more rugged, will start a much larger car and the LED light (that also comes in handy in an emergency!) is much brighter. The larger model also comes with a very nice carrying case.
But USB Batteries serve a secondary purpose in a car: I keep a battery permanently connected to my car plug which means it is always charged. When I need my phone charged, I simply plug it into the secondary battery. That means that it keeps charging at a 2.1A rate even when the car is off. If I need to, I can grab the battery and take it with me for an power supply.
Like I said before, Bestek isn’t the only player in this game, and this being Electronicsforward there are some really good deals on this category below:
It is a mouthful but let me go “ShamWow” on you real quick. At $13, a 10,000mAh dual USB 2A battery is a great deal. But this one is waterproof-ish and rugged too. Amazon Reviewers give it 4/5 stars. Features:
Dual USB Port: 2A USB port for iPad/Tablets, 1A USB ports for cell phones or other electronic devices
10000mah power bank equipped with a compact solar panel
LED flashlight and 4 LED charge indicator shows the charging and discharging process
Rain/Splash-proof design ensures the device functions smoothly when it’s raining, also shock-proof
