Strike is the “world’s first” smart baseball that connects to your iPhone and relays key data

There has never been a shortage of smartphone-connected sporting goods since companies realized that you can easily put a sensor on bats, rackets or shoes. But for baseball, it’s largely been limited to every piece of equipment but the ball itself. A new Kickstarter project is looking to change that. Strike is “the world’s first smart baseball” according to the manufacturer. As you’d expect, it can monitor and detect a number of different stats including speed, trajectory and spin rate. It connects to your smartphone and tracks data with eyes on improving your game over an extended period of time.

Strike has a built-in sensor that is part accelerometer and part gyroscope. Unlike Zepp’s Swing Analyzer, this product is designed for pitchers. It connects over Bluetooth and has been carefully designed to withstand the beating that comes with the life of a baseball. Users can expect around 12 hours of use on a single charge of the built-in battery. The free Strike app combines all of your data into one central location for sharing and analyzation. Currently a pledge of $99 is set to deliver a unit in July.

Denon’s latest pair of reference headphones stun with an aluminum and walnut frame

After focusing on whole home audio for some time, Denon is refocusing itself on headphones, at least for the time being. It’s latest release is a pair of reference-grade over-ears with a sleek wooden and leather trim. The AH-D7200 are made from walnut materials that the manufacturer hopes will carry over a cleaner sound. This is hardly a new phenomenon. Companies like Grado have been using natural materials for years in hopes of capturing a warmer tone that typically comes from a wood like walnut.

Denon uses its 50mm FreeEdge driver system to power these new over-ear headphones. A copper-coated aluminum wire is designed to cut down on any interference that may occur between device and listener. We’re interested in the aluminum free-hanging structure that holds the memory foam earcups in place. Short of trying them on ourselves, the pictures look like these new cans are going to be especially comfortable for long listening sessions. Unfortunately, this beautiful design is going to cost you. Denon plans on retailing the AH-D7200 for $999 when they hit online shelves in January.

Moskito turns an analog smartwatch into a full functioning bike computer in mere seconds

The Moskito Smartwatch hit Kickstarter recently with the goal of combining a number of devices into one attractive wearable. Obviously, the smartwatch market is very crowded these days with Apple, Garmin, and many others trying their hand at this trend. Moskito attempts to standout from the pack with an elegant design and a unique full-featured bicycle computer that can track a number of stats. This watch looks like your typical analog timepiece, but it’s powered by Swiss tech that includes a precision quartz movement. It has a Bluetooth 4.0 radio for iPhone and Android connectivity that can be used to transfer fitness data between devices.

Moskito has three different modes of use, including time, speed and chronograph. Each of which provides a different data set for users. The first acts just like a traditional watch while the other two focus on activity. Speed functions just like a bike computer, with the second hand displaying your current MPH while the minute is used to communicate distance traveled. Chronograph keeps tracks of the rider’s splits and overall progress. With 19 days remaining, Moskito has raised just over $54,000 of its $147,000 goal. Currently, a pledge of $525 will deliver a watch in Q3 2017.

TP-Link introduces slimmer Wi-Fi smart plug with Alexa control, available for purchase today

Buy Now

TP-Link has unveiled a new version of its popular Smart Plugs, the HS-105 Mini. This model offers a slimmer design and does not require the presence of a Wi-Fi connected hub. The latest TP-Link plug continues the recent trend of new smart home devices that play nicely with Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service. Sadly, it does not bring HomeKit functionality to the table. Opting for a slimmer design allows the HS-105 to fit in more locations than its competitors, such as the much larger WeMo Switch. It comes it at just 1- x 2.75- x 2.2-inches.

Smart outlets are an excellent way to bring enhanced control to common household items. Like the rest of TP-Link’s offerings, users will be able to create schedules, monitor usage and remotely access devices via the free smartphone app. Best of all, it connects directly to your existing Wi-Fi thanks to its hub-less design. This is a distinct advantage over pricier alternatives like Philips Hue. The TP-Link HS105 is available for purchase today at Amazon and other online retailers.

RokBlok plays your vinyl anywhere and will even beam it over Bluetooth

The music industry has enjoyed the resurgence of vinyl popularity over the last few years. In fact, this medium is providing more royalties to artists in some countries than digital downloads. Entrepreneurs are cashing in on this trend with new projects left and right, the latest of which is RokBlok. This small wooden box sits on most any vinyl and plays tunes through its built-in speaker as it rotates around like a traditional record player. Even cooler is its built-in Bluetooth radio that wirelessly transmits tunes to nearby speakers.

Dubbed ‘the world’s first infinitely portable, wireless record player’, RokBlok is a supreme example of old-school meeting modern day tech. The included power source provides up to four hours of music playback on 45 and 33 1/3 RPM records. Simply place RokBlok on your favorite vinyl and pull the lever to get started. From there, your music of choice will emit from the speaker or beam to the nearest Bluetooth device. There’s no telling on the quality of playback here, but it certainly is a cool add-on for vinyl enthusiasts. In just a few days, this Kickstarter project has flown past its original $50,000 goal. Currently a pledge of $69 will deliver a unit next September if all goes to plan.

NES Classic demand spawns new RetroEngine Sigma gaming console that supports 28 different systems

Retro gaming has seen an impressive resurgence in 2016. There are plenty of ways to enjoy your favorite games of yesteryear, perhaps none more notable than the recently-released NES Classic. However, Nintendo’s official throwback option has a number of limitations. A small-ish library of just 30 titles and a three-foot controller cable are potential drawbacks. This renewed interested in old school games has spawned a few recent projects, including the RetroEngine Sigma that supports 28 different gaming systems (including NES).

At its core, the Sigma is an emulator that can handle games from Nintendo, GameBoy, PlayStation 1, Atari and others. The plan at this time is to ship with 15 titles at launch but there aren’t likely to be any big names included here to avoid any legal risks. Of course, users will be able to run most games from these consoles with ROM files (at your own risk). The console itself is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor that is capable of spitting out 4K resolutions. It has two USB ports that can be paired with popular third-party controllers on the market today. With a month left on Indiegogo, this project has raised over $150,000. Currently, a pledge of $59 will deliver a unit in May.

The reMarkable Paper Tablet has a special coating to recreate the experience of using a real pad and pencil

Our technology has come a long way, and although Apple Pencil does a pretty good job of converting our handwritten notes, it still can’t replace a good old piece of paper. The new reMarkable Paper Tablet thinks it can do even better. A 10.3-inch e-ink display provides plenty of room to work and a special coating creates extra friction to replicate the experience of writing on an actual piece of paper.

https://youtu.be/34I27KPZM6g

You won’t mistake the reMarkable tablet for an iPad though. The black and white display is made specifically for notetaking and sketches. It includes a special stylus that works at nearly every angle and has over 2,000 levels of pressure sensitivity. This tablet is designed to replicate the paper experience first and foremost with other features coming second. Users can expect to store around 100,000 pages on the internal 8GB flash drive. Paper Tablet is available for pre-order today for $380 with an expected ship date of August 2017.

GE’s sleek new LED smart lamp has Alexa Voice Services built-in

Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant has seen massive success over the last year since it was first introduced with the Echo speaker. While there have been a handful of subsequent releases, we’ve yet to see anything quite like GE’s latest creation. The C by GE LED table lamp has Alexa Voice Service built directly into the base, so you can request information and control your compatible devices without having a speaker nearby. This is the first release that brings Alexa out of home audio and integrates it within another common household product.

The C Lamp is a large circle that houses a number of LED bulbs with a control panel on the base. It looks similar to Dyson’s popular tabletop fans. Details are somewhat scarce about its microphone capabilities, but we’d guess that it would pack the same far-field features set of Amazon Echo. With competition heating up from competitors like Google Home and potentially Apple, Amazon’s partnership with GE is not a surprise. The yet-to-be officially named LED lamp is set for pre-orders in 2017 with a Q2 ship date. Pricing has yet to be announced.

At its core, Glow is designed to measure air quality and alert users if something is awry. But it also has a built-in light, outlet and it can track a number of stats over time.

For the most part, Awair Glow looks like any other smart home product you’d plug into an outlet. A small opening above the pass-through measures key air quality components such as temperature, CO2, humidity, chemical changes and more. All of this is compiled into the iOS app to paint a picture of your home’s air. Additionally, the outlet offers many of the smart features we’ve seen previously from brands like WeMo. You’ll be able to set timers, schedules and monitor usage. While these aren’t groundbreaking features, seeing them all wrapped up into one attractive product is noteworthy. Awair Glow is available for $99 today.

Blink XT is an outdoor IP camera that is battery-powered and loaded with attractive features for the security-minded individual. Its weatherproof design combined with an internal power source shoot it to the top of our list, bypassing those that require an outlet nearby. Just how good is the battery life? Blink promises up to two years of use before it needs a refresh. This impressive longevity is due to the way that the new XT model operates. It records in five to sixty second clips depending on your settings versus continual monitoring.

A myriad of sensors help to detect movement and changes in environment with an eye on maximizing battery life. Motion and temperature detectors highlight the list of features that includes a IP-65 rating for protection against the elements. Blink is also introducing Alexa compatibility on this model, which allows users to control the camera via voice in addition to a smartphone app. Perhaps best of all is Blink’s commitment to free cloud storage, which can be quite pricey with similar products. Amazon and Seagate partner up on new Duet 1TB Hard Drive that automatically syncs your data to the cloud

$99

In an attempt to simplify data backup, Seagate has announced the new Duet 1TB Hard Drive that automatically syncs all of its contents to Amazon’s cloud service. This partnership ensures that data is easily transferrable on-the-go while also taking the guesswork out of backing up your files. Setup is quite simple: plug the hard drive into your Mac or PC, sign into Amazon’s service and apply the included promotional code to claim your year’s worth of cloud storage (a $60 value).

Seagate Duet uses a typical mechanical 1TB hard drive, so you can’t expect lightning speeds here. But the ability to automatically backup your data to Amazon’s cloud with minimal fuss is certainly noteworthy. With news that Apple is potentially leaving the router business, this has the potential to convert some Time Machine users in the long-term if all goes to plan. The Seagate Duet is available for pre-order on Amazon with a December 10th ship date for $99.

Bang & Olufsen brings Active Noise Cancellation to its H9 Wireless Headphones

Order Now

Bang & Olufsen today announced its newest pair of headphones, the Beoplay H9 Wireless with active noise cancellation and stunning design. In typical B&O fashion, this new pair of cans is made from top-grade materials that standout from the competition. The H9 takes its design cues from the previous generation H7’s with a few key additions. Most notable is the ability to cancel out unwanted noise in loud environments. Two small microphones have been added to help aid in this area.

One of the H7’s top features was its sleek touch controls and thankfully B&O has left those on its latest release. You can expect around 14 hours of playback with ANC activated and an additional bump when turned off. It also has full access to the Beoplay app with customizable EQ levels, settings and more. It’s tough to surpass what Apple has done with the new Beats Solo3 and W1 chip, but Bang & Olufsen continues to elevate itself above others in this space with a luxurious design. The new H9 is available for pre-order today in two colors at Amazon for $499 with a December 8th delivery date.

The AIAIAI TMA-2 modular headphone system brings Bluetooth into the mix for iPhone 7 users

There’s been a lot of hubbub over the future of headphones since Apple made the move to eliminate the 3.5mm jack on iPhone 7. A Danish company by the name of AIAIAI has revealed the H05 smart wireless headphone with an integrated Bluetooth system that adds-on to its TMA-2 Modular Headphone system. The goal here is to build a product that can grow and change with consumers over time as technology develops. AIAIAI’s TMA-2 system has been available for awhile with over 1,000 possible configurations that can be changed for individual listening preferences.

The addition of the H-05 opens up a whole new world of wireless possibilites. It offers support for AptX audio for high resolution streaming and users can expect around 16 hours of battery life on a full charge, which is powered via USB-C (another forward facing decision by the company). There are a number of different levels of pledging on Kickstarter for this project, including $174 for the full kit. If all goes to plan, it will ship in May.

8Bitdo’s new wireless NES Classic Mini Receiver lets you play with PS4 controllers and more

If you were fortunate enough to get your hands on the new NES Classic this holiday season, it might have been a surprise when you opened the box to find a measly three-foot controller cable. It sure would be nice to be able to sit just a bit further away than that. Nyko was first on the scene with its Miniboss wireless controller for NES Classic, but now we’re getting a look at 8Bitdo’s latest solution. This $40 kit includes a receiver that will work with any Bluetooth controller and promises zero lag. Notable compatible gamepads include Wii U Pro, PS4 and the entire 8Bitdo lineup.

8Bitdo ships its NES30 Controller, a Retro Receiver and a USB controller in this bundle. Of course, a second kit will need to be purchased to enjoy wire-free two-player gaming. The ability to use modern day gaming pads has the potential to be very attractive for gamers. You can count on around 20 hours of use on a single charge of the NES30 but the trade-off of managing another rechargeable device pails in comparison to the freedom of not having any wires. The 8Bitdo NES 30 Classic Edition Set will be available from Amazon on December 16th for $39.99 shipped.
