Best portable SSDs of the year: Samsung, OWC, Crucial, WD, and more

2023 From $60

We are now rounding up all of our favorite on-the-go storage options in our 2023 collection of the best portable SSDs. While we didn’t see a ton of big-time standout new releases in 2023, there have been some next-generation releases from major brands worth consideration. Something like the new Samsung T5 Evo with up to 8TB capacities is going to be far less universally appealing to most folks, but its new T9 and mainstay T7 series is quite the opposite, much like the new X9 and X10 Pro models from Crucial. This year has also seen some unfortunate controversy in the portable SSD space with some issues arising among the formerly quite popular SanDisk Extreme lineup – my units work just fine, but there have been a ton of failures reported across the interwebs – however there are plenty of reliable solutions out there and we are breaking down our favorite options right now in our 2023 collection of the best portable SSDs to close out the year. Check them out below.

All-time low takes $150 off Samsung’s now even more affordable Galaxy A53 at $300

Reg. $450 $300

Amazon is now offering the best price yet on the unlocked Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. This 128GB smartphone normally sells for $450, but is now dropping down to $299.99 shipped. The $150 in savings arrives to match the all-time low set only twice before, both back at the very beginning of the year in January. Today’s offer is $50 under previous discounts, too. Samsung’s most recent budget-friendly handset is now even more affordable, delivering a series of mid-range specs like a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED screen and Exynos 1280 chipset. Packed into the IP67 water-resistant casing, there’s a 5,000mAh battery which can be refueled via the 25W fast charging-enabled USB-C port. Samsung rounds out the package with the inclusion of microSD card expansion. Dive into our launch coverage to get a closer look at the experience. Then head below for more.

Upgrade your rig with Samsung’s 990 PRO 2TB heatsink SSD at new $150 low (Up to $90 off)

Reg. $240 $150

Joining an ongoing low on the 1TB model at $85, Amazon is now offering the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB Solid-State Drive with heatsink down at $149.99 shipped. This model still fetches a $240 regular price tag and is now up to $90 off. While more recently it has been bouncing between $160 and full price at Amazon, today’s deal marks the lowest price we have tracked there yet. This offer is also $30 under the pre-Prime Day offer we tracked and actually undercuts the price you would pay for the non-heatsink 990 PRO by over $7 (here’s our hands-on review of that model), for further comparison. An upgrade to the popular 980 model, it clocks in at a faster up to 7,450MB/s with PCIe 4.0 architecture and that M.2 form-factor just about all modern PC battlestations and PlayStation 5 require. First cash discount takes $100 off Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 5 at Amazon

$1,700

Amazon is now offering one of the first cash discounts on the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. Dropping the entry-level 256GB model to $1,699.99 shipped after you’ve clipped the on-page coupon, the savings take $100 off the usual $1,800 price tag for an unlocked model. This is the first chance to save on this configuration, with the only other markdowns from Amazon so far applying to the elevated 512GB capacity. Today’s offer is also available alongside a competing promotion that trades the direct cash discount in for a $200 Amazon credit. We take a closer look at the whole experience in our hands-on review.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 5 sees $200 off Amazon launch discount with $200 gift card

$400 off Shop now

Samsung today is officially taking the wraps off the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 today, and the savings are right behind. Courtesy of Amazon today, you can now score the all-new unlocked smartphone with a free storage upgrade for $1,799.99 shipped. That nets you the 512GB version for the same price as the entry-level 256GB capacity, saving you $200. Then Amazon is sweetening the pot by throwing in a $200 Amazon gift card, bringing your total savings up to $400 – all without having to trade in a device. It’s also worth noting that Samsung has its own launch discounts today that are worth a look, too.

Slated to begin shipping in August, the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 is the latest iteration of Samsung’s massive folding smartphone. In its current form, not all too much has changed. There is notably a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip now under the hood as well as Android 13 out of the box, but last year’s form-factor almost entirely remains. There’s still an interior 7.6-inch display that pairs with a secondary 6.2-inch screen on the outside. Samsung has at least spent a lot of this year’s focus on the hinge design, ultimately resulting in both sides of the screen folding a bit closer than before all while sliming down the overall thickness. We break down what else is new over in our launch day coverage at 9to5Google, as well as another launch discount below.
