Why I still use a standalone camera: 6 Reasons why Sony’s RX100 IV makes for a great portable dedicated shooter

Modern smartphones are awesome for taking photos and videos, but I still prefer to use a standalone camera when I’m working.

I’ve had all sorts of cameras in past, most of them of the DLSR or mirrorless variety. The common thread with all of my past standalone cameras was that they were always much larger than the average smartphone.

After owning a phone with a camera for the last 10 years, I desired a standalone camera that featured similar portability. There are lots of pocketable point-and-shoots available on the market, but none of them check off as many bullet-points and feature the visual fidelity of Sony’s RX100 IV.

Sony’s venerable RX100 is legendary for the amount of features that it manages to jam inside of such a small form factor, and the latest model doesn’t disappoint.

Sony MDR-7506 Professional Folding Headphones $70 shipped (Reg. $100)

TopElectronicsDeals (99.4% positive feedback from 4,032 buyers) via eBay Daily Deals offers Sony MDR-7506 Professional Folding Headphones for $69.99 with free shipping. These headphones are incredibly popular and rarely drop from their street price of $85. Today’s deal is the best we’ve ever seen.

The MDR-7506 is a staple within the recording, film and live arenas. Due to its low impedance and closed ear design, the headphone does an outstanding job of cutting down background noise while providing plenty of volume in the studio or in the field. Additionally, the closed design helps eliminate “headphone bleed” when overdubbing in the studio.

The MDR-7506 is an around-the-ear design and is ideal for use with MIDI workstations, camcorders or other equipment with less than powerful headphone amplification. The headphone has a foldable design, making it convenient to store or transport, and its coiled cable allows it to stretch and spring back into place whenever you need a bit more reach.

You can find more discounted headphones in this morning’s roundup from Parrot, Skullcandy, JBL and more.

Update (3/31 2:15pm): Pre-order is now available via Amazon and Best Buy for the limited edition Batman: Arkham Knight bundle. Those interested in the standard bundle can place a pre-order at Amazon and Best Buy as well.

Coinciding with the upcoming release of Batman: Arkham Knight, Sony has announced a new PlayStation 4 bundle that brings more than an added game. This limited edition custom gray PS4 has a subtle likeness of the Dark Knight on the console with a understated moniker “Batman: Arkham Knight” plus a matching DualShock 4 controller. Free Xbox Live Gold/PS Plus Games for March: Rayman Legends, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite + Oddworld

Update (3/3 2:37pm): Sony has just announced its free PlayStation Plus titles for March, which we’ve added below. The PlayStation Plus games will be available on the service later today.

Each month, Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold and Sony’s PlayStation Plus services give away a handful of free games to subscribers, adding value to each company’s multi-console online gaming service. Here are the titles from both services:

For PlayStation Plus, Sony is giving away two PlayStation 4-only games: Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee — New ‘n’ Tasty! (normally $30), the updated version of the classic side-scroller, as well as the cartoony World War 1-inspired game Valiant Hearts: The Great War (normally $15). It’s also offering two PlayStation 3-only titles, the adventure-puzzlers Papo & Yo (normally $10) and Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments (normally $50). PS Vita owners get the skateboard game OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood (normally $15) and the adventure game CounterSpy (normally $15), both of which are also available for the PS4; CounterSpy is also free for the PS3. The total value of this month’s games alone is in excess of $130, and with new free games every month, a one-year PlayStation Plus membership ($50) or $18 three-month membership gives you a lot to play for a comparatively small amount of money.

This will be a great month for Xbox Live Gold members. Microsoft is giving away the 2D action-platformer Rayman Legends (normally $40) to Xbox One players all month long. From March 1 to the 15th, Xbox 360 players get the phenomenal 3D adventure game Tomb Raider (reg. $20) — topic of one of our Gaming For Couples articles — then the incredible first-person shooter Bioshock Infinite (normally $30) from the 16th to the 31st. A one-year Xbox Live Gold membership is normally $60, but there’s a “Limited Time Offer” direct from Microsoft: $39.99. Given the value of games given away each month, and the other benefits it offers (other discounted games, online multiplayer), Xbox Live Gold is now a no-brainer purchase for Xbox owners.

Full descriptions of this month’s titles are below.

Free Xbox Live Gold/PS Plus Games for February: Yakuza 4, Thief, Brothers, Sniper Elite V2 + More

Each month, Sony’s PlayStation Plus and Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold services give away a handful of free games to subscribers, adding value to each company’s multi-console online gaming service. February’s games have been announced, including the following free titles:

For PlayStation Plus, Sony is offering the futuristic PS4 action/strategy RPG Transistor and PS4 ancient Greece-themed action-platformer Apotheon. PS3 owners get the Japanese sandbox action/RPG Yakuza 4 and first-person action/stealth game Thief. PS Vita users get Rogue Legacy and Kick & Fennick; Rogue Legacy is also available for the PS3 and PS4. All of the titles become free to PS Plus users on February 3. Transistor regularly sells for $20, Thief for $40, and Yakuza 4 for $50, making a one-year PlayStation Plus membership ($50) or $18 three-month membership a no-brainer alternative.

For Xbox Live Gold members, Microsoft is giving away the 8-bit-inspired future arena ball game #IDARB (reg. $15) for the Xbox One, as well as the action/RPG/puzzler Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (reg. $15) and Sniper Elite V2 (shown above, reg. $30) for the Xbox 360. A one-year Xbox Live Gold membership is normally $60 and a three-month membership is normally $25, but you can grab the biggie for only $40 on Amazon right now!

New games are typically offered at the beginning of each month, with old games disappearing from the “free” lists above. Full descriptions of this month’s titles are below.

Nintendo showed up with some exciting announcements like a new open world Legend of Zelda and our next look at Xenoblade Chronicles X, unfortunately most of it isn’t due until 2015. Sony and Microsoft, on the other hand, showed off some more immediate titles and products like Halo: The Master Chief Edition due out in November and Bungie’s highly anticipated next title Destiny, scheduled for a September 9th PlayStation 4 release date.

We thought we would put together all the best pre-order bonuses in one place for you starting off with Sony’s PlayStation 4 Destiny Bundle for $449.99. The bundle is set to ship on Sept. 9th when the game releases and it will also come with free Beta Access just like preordering the game does. “Pre-order from Amazon.com and receive access to the upcoming beta. Amazon will email you a code to sign up to receive beta access within 2 business days after you pre-order”

Sony also announced some custom colored DualShock 4 controllers for $60 and a new Limited Edition Gold Wireless Headset in White for $100 to match the Destiny console bundle. The custom colored controllers have a Dec 31, 2014 release date set on them right now and the white headset will ship on the same day as Destiny.

Dont forget about Sony’s new set-top box. PlayStation TV  is now available for preorder at $99.99. It will allow access to movies, tv shows and music as well as hundreds of older PlayStation titles and remote play of Ps4 games.

As many expected, Rockstar announced the PS4, Xbox One and PC version of Grand Theft Auto V at this year’s E3. The game will hit next gen and PC “this fall” and is currently available at Amazon and most major retailers via the Rockstar site.

It’s rated 4.3 out of 5 stars from Amazon reviewers and is a Wirecutter favorite:

…if I was to go out to a store and buy a mirrorless camera for less than $1,000 right now, it would be the NEX-6. None of the competition offer the same quality and features at that price. For sharp images, excellent color, low noise, a viewfinder and plentiful manual controls in a small package, you’re not going to get anything better.
